Waste disposal is an important issue for the community, with older landfills posing environmental risks and new facilities requiring space and resources.

- This equates to 692 kg of waste for every person living in the South Waikato District and is less than the New Zealand average (790 kg per person).
- The amount of waste disposed to landfill per person in South Waikato District has reduced between 2001 and 2004.
