Sources of sulphur oxides in air

Key points

In the Waikato region, vehicles, home heating and industry are the main sources of air pollution. This indicator estimates the proportions of sulphur oxides going into the air from each of these sources. High concentrations of sulphur oxides in the air affect the environment by reacting with water to form the 'acid' found in acid rain. They can also irritate people’s eyes and breathing.

  • Local industry is an important source of sulphur oxides in Te Awamutu and Putaruru.
  • In Tokoroa, Taupo, Te Kuiti, Waihi, Matamata, Ngaruawahia, and Turangi, motor vehicles are the main source of sulphur oxides.
  • In Hamilton, industry and home heating are almost equal sources of sulphur oxide.

What agencies are doing

  • We promote vehicle maintenance vehicle emissions testing.
  • We encourage land use planning that minimises reliance on motor vehicles.
  • We encourage the development of efficient and effective public transport.
  • We provide information for householders on reducing air pollution from home fires.

What you can do to help

  • When selecting home heating methods, consider using alternatives to solid fuel.
  • If you do purchase a burner, ensure that it is appropriately sized to your heating requirements. Consider the efficiency and emissions rating of the burner you choose.
  • Reduce your heating requirements by making sure your home is insulated.
  • If you burn wood, make sure it is dry.
  • When burning coal or wood, don’t let the fire smoulder because it will create more smoke.
  • Keep your motor vehicles well tuned so they burn clean and create no visible smoke.
  • Whenever possible, try to reduce your vehicle use. You could try carpooling, using public transport (trains, buses and shuttles), cycling and walking.

What we want to achieve

The community outcomes we are seeking to achieve by monitoring the source of carbon dioxide emissions to air are:

  • The iconic landscapes and natural features of our environment define and sustain us. We respect and celebrate them as taonga.
  • Our natural environment is protected and respected. Its ecological balance is restored, its air, soil and water quality is improved and its native biodiversity is enhanced.
  • The traditional role of iwi and hapu as kaitiaki is acknowledged, respected and enabled.
  • Our region’s waterways have consistently high water quality.
