Landcare groups

Key points

The number of Landcare groups in the region is a measure of community awareness of land management issues and involvement in environmental projects. Landcare groups work to improve their local environments. They help protect the land and water by fencing and planting near waterways (rivers, streams, lakes, wetlands and harbours) and in high erosion areas such as steep land and land with slips.

  • There are now 35 Landcare groups in our Region. Environment Waikato helped start the region’s first Landcare group in 1992.
  • The number of Landcare groups in the Waikato region from 1992 to 2003. The number of groups has increased steadily.
