Building consents

Key points

This indicator provides a monthly measure of the number and value of all building consents issued in a territorial authority area that have a value of $5,000 or higher. The number of building consents issued is seen as a leading indicator of economic activity in an area.

  • Since mid-2007 there has been a general decline in the trend for the number of new housing units.  According to Statistics New Zealand figures, for the Waikato Region there were 1,939 building consents issued in the year to December 2010, decreasing to 1,677 for the year to December 2011.

What we want to achieve

The community outcomes we are seeking to achieve by monitoring the number of building consents issued are:

  • Our regional and local economies are robust and diverse, providing opportunities throughout the Waikato region.
  • The growth, wealth and uniqueness of the Maori economy is acknowledged and supported.
