Key points
This indicator provides a monthly measure of the number and value of all building consents issued in a territorial authority area that have a value of $5,000 or higher. The number of building consents issued is seen as a leading indicator of economic activity in an area.
- Since mid 2007 there has been a decline in the national trend for the number of new housing units. The slump appears to have bottomed out during the first quarter of 2009.
- Building consent numbers in Matamata-Piako District have been relatively low over the past two years.

What we want to achieve
The community outcomes we are seeking to achieve by monitoring the number of building consents issued are:
- Our regional and local economies are robust and diverse, providing opportunities throughout the Waikato region.
- The growth, wealth and uniqueness of the Maori economy is acknowledged and supported.
