Key points
This indicator measures the number of injuries annually resulting from road traffic incidents. Injuries resulting from road traffic crashes can have large costs to individuals and communities.
- According to the 2009 Social Report, 365 New Zealanders died as a result of motor vehicle crashes during 2008, a rate of 8.6 deaths per 100,000 population. The Waikato regional death rate per annum from motor vehicle crashes was 18.6 per 100,000 population during 2008. The Taupo District rate was 44.9 per 100,000 population - approximately five times the national rate.
- The number of motor vehicle injuries on Waikato Region roads has risen slightly since 2001, reflecting the national trend. The annual rate of motor vehicle injuries in Taupo District remained relatively between 2001 and 2008.
