Participation in cultural and arts activities

Key points

This indicator measures the number of people participating in a range of cultural activities during a set reference period. Increasing recognition is being given to the importance of cultural activities in the daily lives of New Zealanders. A developed culture, an appreciation of the unique aspects of our culture – particularly Maori culture – and a strong cultural identity contribute positively to matters as diverse as economic growth, social cohesion, the acceptance and encouragement of diversity, creative thinking in a range of fields, and the imbuing of self-confidence in people.
